This new technology is being used to treat a number of different cancers through personalised treatment.
Cancer occurs when from our own body begin to replicate uncontrollably. Usually any cell can only multiply so many times before it stops replicating. The immune system ,among other mechanisms, plays a role in controlling the replication of cells. When one or more of these mechanisms fails cells replicate uncontrollably and turn into tumours.
The immune system often finds it hard to recognise and destroy these cells because on their surface they have similarities to other cells in the body which should not be destroyed.
CAR-T Cell Immunotherapy involves removing T-Cells from the patient’s body and genetically engineering them to have surface markers that target the hosts own cancer cells. After all this the modified T-cells are re-introduced into the body can now easily recognise the cancer cells as infectious agents and appropriately destroy the cancerous cells.
